The Influence Of Sufism On Classical Turkish Poetry: The Example Of Sufi Poets From Rumelia

Abstract

Sufism is known as a field that is defined as the knowledge of the heart and focuses on spiritual experiences. It is one of the important sources of Turkish classical literature. No matter how things and events are looked at, the effects of Sufism can be seen in the poems of almost every divan poet. While some poets deal with Sufism in their poems, some poets use Sufism as a subtle motif. The realization of Sufism was through sects. A mature guide, that is, a perfect murshid, is needed to join a cult. With the leadership of the masters, sub-branches were formed in the sects, and in time, many branches emerged due to differences in understanding and method. For centuries, sects have been indispensable elements of Muslims in the Ottoman Islamic society. They have become voluntary institutions by providing religious, moral and social services to the public through sects, lodges and zaviyes. Sufism and sects had an important place in the socio-cultural life as well as in the Ottoman religious life. This effect can be seen in the lives and poems of divan poets. According to the tezkires, the poets joined one of the Mevlevi, Nakşi, Halveti, Bektashi, Gülşeni, Bayrami, Kadiri, Celveti, Hamzavi, Şa'bani, Hurufi and Üveysi sects. Sects have been a source of spiritual inspiration to poets and have led to the use of mystical motifs in their poems. The poets expressed their loyalty to the sects in their poems and put forward a worldview shaped by the teachings of these sects. In this way, sects became an important part of Ottoman literature and culture. In this period, many poets were interested in Sufism due to the conditions required by the time and became an authority through the course of suluk. Some of them assumed this duty by rising to the posts of postnishinlik and sheikh. In this study, 17-18 years old Rumelia origin. In this study, some poets who lived in the 19th century, who were members of the sect and who had a divan, will be discussed.
