Supporting The Social Development of Migrant Children Between 7-12 Years of Age

Abstract

It is a known fact that migration, which has emerged for various reasons throughout history, has many positive and negative effects on human life. Women, adolescents, and children are more affected by the negative consequences of migration. Migration is a significant phenomenon that affects children's development. If migration has a restrictive aspect for children, it negatively impacts their social development levels. When children enter a different sociocultural environment, they experience problems in fulfilling the developmental tasks necessary to continue their social development. Based on this situation, our study aims to determine what should be considered to ensure healthy social development for migrant children aged 7-12. The literature review shows that migration research mostly focuses on children's health and education problems, that the social development of migrant children is not adequately addressed, and that existing social development studies generally cover the preschool age group. In this context, our study aims to examine the social development processes of migrant children from different perspectives and to enrich the scientific literature in this field. The method of our study is document analysis, one of the qualitative research methods. Within the scope of our research, studies related to our topic have been examined, and the obtained data has been systematically integrated. According to our research, the period between 7-12 years of age is a critical developmental stage where the foundations of an individual's social skills are laid and social relationships are shaped. The developmental tasks that children need to fulfill during this period include establishing positive peer relationships, empathy, taking responsibility, developing problem-solving skills, gaining self-confidence, strengthening decision-making ability, cooperation, and assertiveness. The points to be considered for migrant children to fulfill these developmental tasks in a healthy manner can be listed as: migrant children learning the language of the place of migration, including migrant children in educational environments, organizing educational programs and curricula suitable for children's developmental levels, organizing educational and social activities and giving children active roles in these activities, raising awareness of children's families, and increasing peer interaction. Families, teachers, and the legislators and implementers of the migrant society have important duties and responsibilities for these activities to be carried out effectively and efficiently.
