Comparison of Basra and Kufa Schools of Nahw in terms of their Approach to Qiraat

Abstract

In this article, Basra and Kufa schools of Nahw will be compared in terms of their approaches to qiraat. As it is known, the schools of grammar, which have an important place in the formation of the Arabic language, and their representatives have been the source of the majority of Islamic sciences with their views. The principles and rules of Arabic grammar are mostly based on the views of these schools. The schools of Basra and Kufa made extensive use of the Qur'an, the main source of Islam, in determining their views. As a matter of fact, some scholars believe that the Arabic language was clearly laid down after the revelation of the Qur'an. In this context, it is impossible for these schools of thought to ignore the different ways of reading the Qur'an. The differences in the Qur'an have been the source of many Islamic sciences, as well as the source of the science of grammar. He schools of Basra and Kufa have been compared in many works in terms of Arabic grammar. However, it was found that these schools were not independently compared in terms of their view of the qiraat and their evaluation of different readings. In this study, the views and evaluations of the representatives of the Basra and Kufa schools will be mutually determined within the framework of their individual views. In this framework, it is thought to contribute to the field and to be a source for future studies.
