An Examination of the Inclusion of Concepts and Teaching Techniques in the 2024 Social Studies Curriculum

Abstract

Concepts are the fundamental building blocks in social studies education that enable students to make sense of information and establish connections between events and phenomena. Concept teaching is a crucial component of social studies instruction, facilitating students’ understanding of relationships between historical, geographical, and social issues within a conceptual framework. In this context, the extent to which concepts are included in the curriculum and the teaching techniques employed for concept instruction are of significant importance. This study aims to identify the key concepts incorporated into the 2024 Social Studies Curriculum, developed within the framework of the Türkiye Century Education Model, how these concepts are reflected in learning domains, and which concept teaching techniques are utilized within the curriculum. The research was conducted using a qualitative design with document analysis as the primary method. The data source of this study is the 2024 Social Studies Curriculum, and the data were analyzed through content analysis. The findings reveal that the key concepts presented in the curriculum are not fully integrated into the learning domains. Moreover, while the curriculum includes certain concept teaching techniques, the diversity of these techniques remains limited. Based on the research findings, several recommendations have been proposed to enhance the effectiveness of concept teaching in social studies education.
