An Examination of the Validity, Reliability, and Demographic Dimensions of the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support among Accounting Professionals: A Study in the Province of Sivas

Abstract

This study aims to examine the psychometric properties of the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) within a sample of accounting professionals operating in Sivas, Türkiye, and to assess whether perceived social support differs significantly across various demographic variables. Originally developed by Zimet et al. (1988) and adapted into Turkish by Eker and Akar (1995), the scale consists of three subdimensions; support from family, friends, and significant others and includes a total of 12 items. The research was conducted using a quantitative approach within the framework of a descriptive survey model. The sample was determined through convenience sampling, and data were collected via a structured questionnaire administered to 160 accounting professionals. Participants ranged in age from 18 to over 58 years; 69.4% were male and 30.6% female. The data were analyzed using SPSS 24.0 and AMOS 24.0 statistical software. To test the reliability of the scale, Cronbach's Alpha coefficients were calculated. For construct validity, both Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) were applied. CFA results indicated a strong model-data fit (χ²/df = 1.963; GFI = 0.916; NFI = 0.932; CFI = 0.965; RMSEA = 0.078). Furthermore, standardized factor loadings ranged from 0.426 to 0.936, with all loadings found to be statistically significant. Perceived social support did not differ significantly across variables such as gender, age, and professional experience; however, significant differences were observed with respect to education level, marital status, and income level. These differences were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis H tests. The findings suggest that perceived social support levels vary among certain demographic groups. Overall, the results confirm that the MSPSS demonstrates valid and reliable measurement properties when applied to accounting professionals.
